{"id":90791,"date":"2022-10-28T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-10-28T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/medgoo.com\/index.php\/2022\/10\/28\/joint-statement-issued-for-metabolic-and-bariatric-surgery\/"},"modified":"2022-10-31T23:30:09","modified_gmt":"2022-10-31T23:30:09","slug":"joint-statement-issued-for-metabolic-and-bariatric-surgery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medgoo.com\/index.php\/2022\/10\/28\/joint-statement-issued-for-metabolic-and-bariatric-surgery\/","title":{"rendered":"Joint Statement Issued for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>\n<p>MBS recommended for individuals with BMI \u226535 kg\/m<sup>2<\/sup>, irrespective of presence, absence, or severity of comorbidities<\/p>\n<\/h3>\n<p><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>FRIDAY, Oct. 28, 2022 (HealthDay News) &#8212; Metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) is recommended for individuals with a body mass index (BMI) of \u00e2\u0089\u00a535 kg\/m<sup>2<\/sup>, regardless of the presence or absence of comorbidities, according to a joint statement issued by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders and published online Oct. 20 in <em>Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases<\/em> and <em>Obesity Surgery<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><span><\/span>Dan Eisenberg, M.D., from the Stanford School of Medicine in Palo Alto, California, and colleagues developed a joint statement on the current available scientific information on metabolic and bariatric surgery and its indications.<\/p>\n<p>The authors recommend MBS for individuals with a BMI of \u00e2\u0089\u00a535 kg\/m<sup>2<\/sup>, irrespective of the presence, absence, or severity of comorbidities. For individuals with metabolic disease and BMI of 30 to 34.9 kg\/m<sup>2<\/sup>, MBS should be considered. In the Asian population, BMI thresholds should be adjusted, with a BMI of \u00e2\u0089\u00a525 kg\/m<sup>2<\/sup> indicating clinical obesity, and MBS should be offered to individuals with BMI of \u00e2\u0089\u00a527.5 kg\/m<sup>2<\/sup>. The long-term safety and efficacy of MBS has been consistently demonstrated.
