{"id":82189,"date":"2022-05-26T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-05-26T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/medgoo.com\/index.php\/2022\/05\/26\/exposure-to-air-pollution-may-increase-in-hospital-stroke-related-deaths\/"},"modified":"2022-05-31T17:11:55","modified_gmt":"2022-05-31T17:11:55","slug":"exposure-to-air-pollution-may-increase-in-hospital-stroke-related-deaths","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medgoo.com\/index.php\/2022\/05\/26\/exposure-to-air-pollution-may-increase-in-hospital-stroke-related-deaths\/","title":{"rendered":"Exposure to Air Pollution May Increase In-Hospital Stroke-Related Deaths"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>\n<p>Each 10 \u00b5g\/m<sup>3<\/sup> increase in short-term, long-term average exposure to PM<sub>1<\/sub>, PM<sub>2.5<\/sub>, PM<sub>10<\/sub> linked to increased risk for in-hospital fatality<\/p>\n<\/h3>\n<p><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>THURSDAY, May 26, 2022 (HealthDay News) &#8212; Short-term and long-term exposure to particulate matter (PM) pollution is a risk factor for in-hospital stroke-related death, according to a study published online May 25 in <em>Neurology<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Miao Cai, Ph.D., from Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, China, and colleagues characterized the association between ambient PM of different sizes (PM \u00e2\u0089\u00a4 1 \u00c2\u00b5m in aerodynamic diameter [PM<sub>1<\/sub>], PM<sub>2.5<\/sub>, and PM<sub>10<\/sub>) and in-hospital case fatality among stroke patients in China from 2013 to 2019. Seven-day and annual averages of PM prior to hospitalization were estimated.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers identified 32,140 in-hospital stroke fatalities among 3,109,634 stroke hospitalizations (case fatality rate, 1.03 percent). Each 10 \u00c2\u00b5g\/m<sup>3<\/sup> increase in seven-day (short-term) average exposure to PM was associated with increased in-hospital case fatality, with odds ratios of 1.058, 1.037, and 1.025 for PM<sub>1<\/sub>, PM<sub>2.5<\/sub>, and PM<sub>10<\/sub>, respectively. For annual averages (long-term), similar but larger odds ratios were seen (1.240, 1.105, and 1.090, respectively).
