{"id":790,"date":"2018-02-16T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-02-16T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/medgoo.com\/index.php\/2018\/02\/16\/rotating-night-shift-work-tied-to-increased-odds-of-t2dm\/"},"modified":"2018-02-20T17:09:39","modified_gmt":"2018-02-20T17:09:39","slug":"rotating-night-shift-work-tied-to-increased-odds-of-t2dm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medgoo.com\/index.php\/2018\/02\/16\/rotating-night-shift-work-tied-to-increased-odds-of-t2dm\/","title":{"rendered":"Rotating Night Shift Work Tied to Increased Odds of T2DM"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Working more night shifts per month linked to increased odds of type 2 diabetes<\/h3>\n<p><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>FRIDAY, Feb. 16, 2018 (HealthDay News) &#8212; Rotating shift work which includes night shifts is associated with increased odds of type 2 diabetes, according to a study published online Feb. 12 in <i>Diabetes Care<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>C\u00e9line Vetter, Ph.D., from the University of Colorado in Boulder, and colleagues examined associations of current and lifetime night shift work exposure (272,214 and 70,480 participants, respectively) with type 2 diabetes risk (6,770 and 1,191 prevalent cases, respectively).<\/p>\n<p>The researchers found that all current night shift workers were at higher multivariable-adjusted odds for type 2 diabetes compared with day workers (odds ratios [OR], 1.15 [95 percent confidence interval (CI), 1.05 to 1.26], 1.18 [95 percent CI, 1.05 to 1.32], and 1.44 [95 percent CI, 1.19 to 1.73] for none or rare night shifts, some nights, and usual nights), except for current permanent night shift workers (odds ratio, 1.09 [95 percent CI, 0.93 to 1.27]). Working more night shifts per month correlated with increased odds of type 2 diabetes considering a person&#8217;s lifetime work schedule and compared with never shift workers (<3\/month: OR, 1.24 [95 percent CI, 0.90 to 1.68]; 3 to 8\/month: OR, 1.11 [95 percent CI, 0.90 to 1.37]; and >8\/month: OR, 1.36 [95 percent CI, 1.14 to 1.62]).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Night shift work, especially rotating shift work including night shifts, is associated with higher type 2 diabetes odds and that the number of night shifts worked per month appears most relevant for type 2 diabetes odds,&#8221; the authors write.<\/p>\n<p>Two authors disclosed financial ties to the pharmaceutical and other industries.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/care.diabetesjournals.org\/content\/early\/2018\/01\/31\/dc17-1933\" target=\"_new\">Abstract\/Full Text (subscription or payment may be required)<\/a><\/p>\n<p><i><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Copyright \u00a9 2018 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthday.com\/\" target=\"_new\">HealthDay<\/a>.
