Schindler, M.D., Ph.D., from the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, and colleagues examined whether plasma biomarkers of amyloid, tau, and neuroaxonal injury identify brain injury consistently across racial groups. Individuals who self-identified as African American were matched to self-identified non-Hispanic Whites by age, <em>APOE<\/em> \u00ce\u00b54 carrier status, and cognitive status; 76 pairs were included.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers found that compared with non-Hispanic Whites, African Americans were less likely to have brain amyloidosis by cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) A\u00ce\u00b242\/A\u00ce\u00b240 (22 versus 43 percent positive). Models predicting CSF A\u00ce\u00b242\/A\u00ce\u00b240 status based on plasma biomarker levels had areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.86 for A\u00ce\u00b242\/A\u00ce\u00b240, 0.76 for p-tau181, 0.69 for p-tau231, and 0.64 for neurofilament light chain (NfL). In models predicting CSF A\u00ce\u00b242\/A\u00ce\u00b240 status with plasma A\u00ce\u00b242\/A\u00ce\u00b240, which included age, sex, <em>APOE<\/em> \u00ce\u00b54 carrier status, race, and cognitive status as covariates, the probability of CSF A\u00ce\u00b242\/A\u00ce\u00b240 positivity was not affected by race. African Americans had a lower probability of CSF A\u00ce\u00b242\/A\u00ce\u00b240 positivity in similar models based on plasma p-tau181, p-tau231, and NfL (odds ratios, 0.31, 0.30, and 0.27, respectively).
