{"id":6745,"date":"2018-06-18T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-06-18T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/medgoo.com\/index.php\/2018\/06\/18\/preterm-birth-tied-to-lower-job-rate-education-in-adulthood\/"},"modified":"2018-06-19T16:08:59","modified_gmt":"2018-06-19T16:08:59","slug":"preterm-birth-tied-to-lower-job-rate-education-in-adulthood","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medgoo.com\/index.php\/2018\/06\/18\/preterm-birth-tied-to-lower-job-rate-education-in-adulthood\/","title":{"rendered":"Preterm Birth Tied to Lower Job Rate, Education in Adulthood"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Preterm\/low-birth-weight infants less likely to complete higher education, be employed as adults<\/h3>\n<p><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>MONDAY, June 18, 2018 (HealthDay News) &#8212; Preterm birth and\/or low-birth weight (PT\/LBW) infants have decreased educational qualifications and rates of employment in adulthood, according to a review published online June 6 in <i>Pediatrics<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Ayten Bilgin, Ph.D., from the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom, and colleagues conducted a systematic literature review to identify prospective longitudinal and registry studies assessing selected wealth-related outcomes in PT\/LBW-born adults versus term-born controls. The authors included 23 studies in their analysis.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers found that PT\/LBW was associated with decreased likelihood of higher education qualifications attainment (odds ratio, 0.74), a lower employment rate (odds ratio, 0.83), and an increased likelihood of receiving social benefits (odds ratio, 1.25). For education qualifications only, a dose-response relationship according to gestational age was seen. PT\/LBW-born adults and adults born at term did not differ significantly regarding independent living.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Although the magnitude of these associations was small in general, they were particularly strong in VPT- or VLBW-born adults for education qualifications and were consistent across geographic regions,&#8221; the authors write.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pediatrics.aappublications.org\/content\/early\/2018\/06\/04\/peds.2017-3625\" target=\"_new\">Abstract\/Full Text (subscription or payment may be required)<\/a><\/p>\n<p><i><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Copyright \u00a9 2018 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthday.com\/\" target=\"_new\">HealthDay<\/a>.
