{"id":6674,"date":"2018-06-15T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-06-15T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/medgoo.com\/index.php\/2018\/06\/15\/walk-test-ids-risk-of-cognitive-dysfunction-post-cardiac-surgery\/"},"modified":"2018-06-18T17:09:03","modified_gmt":"2018-06-18T17:09:03","slug":"walk-test-ids-risk-of-cognitive-dysfunction-post-cardiac-surgery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medgoo.com\/index.php\/2018\/06\/15\/walk-test-ids-risk-of-cognitive-dysfunction-post-cardiac-surgery\/","title":{"rendered":"Walk Test IDs Risk of Cognitive Dysfunction Post Cardiac Surgery"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Preoperative 6-minute walk distance linked to POCD risk in older adults undergoing cardiac surgery<\/h3>\n<p><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>FRIDAY, June 15, 2018 (HealthDay News) &#8212; The six-minute walk distance (6MWD) test is useful in identifying patients with a higher likelihood of developing postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) following cardiac surgery, according to a study published online May 9 in the <i>Annals of Thoracic Surgery<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Kazuhiro Hayashi, P.T., from Nagoya University Hospital in Japan, and colleagues investigated the association between preoperative 6MWD with POCD in 181 patients (mean age, 71.4 years) undergoing cardiac operations.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers found that the POCD group had a significantly lower 6MWD (median, 400 m) versus the non-POCD group (median, 450 m). Independent risk factors for POCD included the 6MWD, intensive care unit length of stay, age, and the Mini-Mental State Examination score.
