{"id":65491,"date":"2021-10-22T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-10-22T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/medgoo.com\/index.php\/2021\/10\/22\/dysglycemia-risk-up-for-women-with-pcos-regardless-of-bmi\/"},"modified":"2021-10-26T15:11:36","modified_gmt":"2021-10-26T15:11:36","slug":"dysglycemia-risk-up-for-women-with-pcos-regardless-of-bmi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medgoo.com\/index.php\/2021\/10\/22\/dysglycemia-risk-up-for-women-with-pcos-regardless-of-bmi\/","title":{"rendered":"Dysglycemia Risk Up for Women With PCOS, Regardless of BMI"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>\n<p>Combined oral contraceptive pill use associated with reduced dysglycemia risk for women with PCOS<\/p>\n<\/h3>\n<p><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>FRIDAY, Oct. 22, 2021 (HealthDay News) &#8212; Women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) have an increased risk for dysglycemia in all body mass index (BMI) subgroups, and combined oral contraceptive pill (COCP) use is associated with a reduced dysglycemia risk, according to a study published online Oct. 14 in <em>Diabetes Care<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Balachandran Kumarendran, M.B.B.S., from the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom, and colleagues conducted a retrospective population-based cohort study to examine dysglycemia risk among 64,051 women with PCOS and 123,545 matched controls and a nested pharmacoepidemiological case-control study to examine COCP use in relation to the risk for dysglycemia (2,407 women with PCOS with and without a diagnosis of dysglycemia during follow-up [cases and controls]).<\/p>\n<p>The researchers found that after adjustment for age, social deprivation, BMI, ethnicity, and smoking, the hazard ratio for dysglycemia was 1.87 for women with PCOS; the rates of dysglycemia were increased in all BMI subgroups. Reduced dysglycemia risk was seen for women with PCOS and COCP use (adjusted odds ratio, 0.72).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Women with PCOS have a significantly increased risk of dysglycemia that persisted after adjustment for BMI, corroborating the recommendation that women with PCOS should be systematically screened for type 2 diabetes irrespective of body weight category,&#8221; the authors write. &#8220;In our nested pharmacoepidemiology study, we found that women with PCOS and exposure to COCPs had a lower risk of incident dysglycemia.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/care.diabetesjournals.org\/lookup\/doi\/10.2337\/dc21-0437\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Abstract\/Full Text (subscription or payment may be required)<\/a><\/p>\n<p><i><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Copyright \u00a9 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthday.com\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">HealthDay<\/a>.
