{"id":6506,"date":"2018-06-12T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-06-12T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/medgoo.com\/index.php\/2018\/06\/12\/long-term-type-1-diabetes-associated-with-cognitive-decline\/"},"modified":"2018-06-13T16:09:23","modified_gmt":"2018-06-13T16:09:23","slug":"long-term-type-1-diabetes-associated-with-cognitive-decline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medgoo.com\/index.php\/2018\/06\/12\/long-term-type-1-diabetes-associated-with-cognitive-decline\/","title":{"rendered":"Long-Term Type 1 Diabetes Associated With Cognitive Decline"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Deficits similar for long-term type 1 diabetes and age-matched patients with type 2 diabetes<\/h3>\n<p><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>TUESDAY, June 12, 2018 (HealthDay News) &#8212; Both patients with type 1 and patients with type 2 diabetes show overall worse cognition than people without diabetes, according to a study published online June 5 in <i>Diabetes Care<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Gail Musen, Ph.D., from Harvard University in Boston, and colleagues compared cognition in 82 individuals with 50 or more years of type 1 diabetes (Medalists), 31 age-matched individuals with type 2 diabetes, and 30 age-matched control subjects without diabetes.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers found that, compared with control subjects, both individuals with type 1 diabetes and individuals with type 2 diabetes performed worse on immediate and delayed recall (P \u2264 0.002) and psychomotor speed in both hands (P \u2264 0.01), and showed a trend toward worse executive function (P = 0.05). Cardiovascular disease was associated with decreased executive function and proliferative diabetic retinopathy with slower psychomotor speed among Medalists.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Although both groups with diabetes showed similar deficit patterns, the underlying mechanisms may be different,&#8221; the authors write. &#8220;Now that patients with type 1 diabetes are living longer, efforts should be made to evaluate cognition and to identify modifying behaviors to slow decline.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/care.diabetesjournals.org\/content\/early\/2018\/05\/25\/dc17-1955\" target=\"_new\">Abstract\/Full Text (subscription or payment may be required)<\/a><\/p>\n<p><i><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Copyright \u00a9 2018 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthday.com\/\" target=\"_new\">HealthDay<\/a>.
