{"id":57171,"date":"2021-06-30T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-06-30T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/medgoo.com\/index.php\/2021\/06\/30\/lower-bmi-cutoff-tied-to-endometrial-cancer-in-chinese-women\/"},"modified":"2021-06-30T16:10:08","modified_gmt":"2021-06-30T16:10:08","slug":"lower-bmi-cutoff-tied-to-endometrial-cancer-in-chinese-women","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medgoo.com\/index.php\/2021\/06\/30\/lower-bmi-cutoff-tied-to-endometrial-cancer-in-chinese-women\/","title":{"rendered":"Lower BMI Cutoff Tied to Endometrial Cancer in Chinese Women"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>\n<p>Lower obesity threshold of BMI \u226525 kg\/m<sup>2<\/sup> tied to increased risk of endometrial cancer in Asian women presenting with postmenopausal bleeding<\/p>\n<\/h3>\n<p><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>WEDNESDAY, June 30, 2021 (HealthDay News) &#8212; Body mass index (BMI) \u00e2\u0089\u00a525 kg\/m<sup>2<\/sup> is independently associated with increased risk of endometrial cancer among Chinese women presenting with postmenopausal bleeding, according to a study published online June 30 in <em>Menopause<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Fangzhi Liu, M.B.Ch.B., from the Prince of Wales Hospital in Hong Kong, and colleagues examined whether BMI of 25 kg\/m<sup>2<\/sup> would delineate increased risk of endometrial cancer in a cohort of 4,164 women referred for postmenopausal bleeding. Participants had a medical history taken and underwent BMI measurement, transvaginal pelvic ultrasonography, and endometrial sampling.<\/p>\n<p>Within the cohort, 20.8 and 38.7 percent were overweight (BMI, 23 to 24.9 kg\/m<sup>2<\/sup>) and obese (BMI, \u00e2\u0089\u00a525 kg\/m<sup>2<\/sup>), respectively, and 3.9 percent had endometrial cancer. The researchers observed an association for prevalence of endometrial cancer with BMI category. Compared with BMI <25 kg\/m<sup>2<\/sup>, BMI \u00e2\u0089\u00a525 kg\/m<sup>2<\/sup> was independently associated with a 1.57-times increased risk of endometrial cancer in multivariable analysis.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This study highlights the known relationship between BMI and endometrial cancer and suggests that the Asian BMI standard for obesity (\u00e2\u0089\u00a525 kg\/m\u00c2\u00b2) helps to identify endometrial cancer in Asian women with postmenopausal bleeding,&#8221; Stephanie Faubion, M.D., medical director of the North American Menopause Society, said in a statement. &#8220;Key takeaways are that all women with postmenopausal bleeding should undergo evaluation, and obesity remains an important and modifiable risk factor for endometrial cancer, with a linear relationship between BMI and endometrial cancer risk.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/menopausejournal\/Abstract\/9000\/Obesity_increases_endometrial_cancer_risk_in.96944.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Abstract\/Full Text (subscription or payment may be required)<\/a><\/p>\n<p><i><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Copyright \u00a9 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthday.com\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">HealthDay<\/a>.
