{"id":52479,"date":"2021-03-31T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-03-31T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/medgoo.com\/index.php\/2021\/03\/31\/exercise-may-slow-cognitive-decline-in-some-with-early-parkinson-disease\/"},"modified":"2021-04-02T17:11:03","modified_gmt":"2021-04-02T17:11:03","slug":"exercise-may-slow-cognitive-decline-in-some-with-early-parkinson-disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medgoo.com\/index.php\/2021\/03\/31\/exercise-may-slow-cognitive-decline-in-some-with-early-parkinson-disease\/","title":{"rendered":"Exercise May Slow Cognitive Decline in Some With Early Parkinson Disease"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>\n<p>Higher physical activity related to slower <em>APOE<\/em> \u03b54-related cognitive decline in early Parkinson disease<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/h3>\n<p><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>WEDNESDAY, March 31, 2021 (HealthDay News) &#8212; Increased levels of physical activity may have a protective effect on apolipoprotein E (<em>APOE<\/em>) \u00ce\u00b54-related cognitive decline in early Parkinson disease (PD), according to a study published online March 31 in <em>Neurology<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Ryul Kim, M.D., from Inha University Hospital in Incheon, South Korea, and colleagues used data from the Parkinson&#8217;s Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI) cohort to examine whether greater physical activity could modify the negative association of <em>APOE<\/em> \u00ce\u00b54 with longitudinal cognitive changes in early PD. Self-reported physical activity was initiated at two years after enrollment and was analyzed longitudinally based on assessments at years 2, 3, and 4. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment was used to measure cognitive function annually.<\/p>\n<p>Data were included for 173 early PD patients (27 percent <em>APOE<\/em> \u00ce\u00b54 carriers). The researchers found that the rate of cognitive decline was steeper with the <em>APOE<\/em> \u00ce\u00b54 allele versus the non-<em>APOE<\/em> \u00ce\u00b54 allele (estimate, \u00e2\u0088\u00921.33). A significant interaction was identified between physical activity and <em>APOE<\/em> \u00ce\u00b54, with higher physical activity related to slower <em>APOE<\/em> \u00ce\u00b54-related cognitive decline (estimate, 0.007).
