{"id":4310,"date":"2018-04-25T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-04-25T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/medgoo.com\/index.php\/2018\/04\/25\/alcohol-consumption-has-moderate-association-with-pms\/"},"modified":"2018-04-26T16:09:11","modified_gmt":"2018-04-26T16:09:11","slug":"alcohol-consumption-has-moderate-association-with-pms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medgoo.com\/index.php\/2018\/04\/25\/alcohol-consumption-has-moderate-association-with-pms\/","title":{"rendered":"Alcohol Consumption Has Moderate Association With PMS"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Intake of alcohol linked to increase in PMS risk; reverse causation process is possible<\/h3>\n<p><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>WEDNESDAY, April 25, 2018 (HealthDay News) &#8212; Alcohol intake may be linked to the risk of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), according to a review published online April 23 in <i>BMJ Open<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Mar\u00eda del Mar Fern\u00e1ndez, from the University of Santiago de Compostela in Spain, and colleagues conducted a systematic literature review to assess the role of alcohol in the occurrence of PMS.<\/p>\n<p>Based upon 19 eligible studies, intake of alcohol was associated with a moderate increase in the risk of PMS (odds ratio, 1.45). This association was most pronounced with heavy drinking (odds ratio, 1.79). It is plausible there is a reverse causation process, in which PMS-affected women use alcohol to mitigate the effect of the syndrome.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our results suggest that alcohol intake presents a moderate association with PMS risk,&#8221; the authors write. &#8220;Future studies should avoid cross-sectional designs and focus on determining whether there is a threshold of alcohol intake under which the harmful effect on PMS is non-existent.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/8\/3\/e019490\" target=\"_new\">Abstract\/Full Text<\/a><\/p>\n<p><i><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Copyright \u00a9 2018 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthday.com\/\" target=\"_new\">HealthDay<\/a>.
