{"id":3386,"date":"2018-04-06T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-04-06T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/medgoo.com\/index.php\/2018\/04\/06\/glycemic-extremes-in-t1dm-impact-cognitive-skills-in-kids\/"},"modified":"2018-04-09T16:09:56","modified_gmt":"2018-04-09T16:09:56","slug":"glycemic-extremes-in-t1dm-impact-cognitive-skills-in-kids","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medgoo.com\/index.php\/2018\/04\/06\/glycemic-extremes-in-t1dm-impact-cognitive-skills-in-kids\/","title":{"rendered":"Glycemic Extremes in T1DM Impact Cognitive Skills in Kids"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Meta-analysis shows lower intelligence, diminished attention, slower psychomotor speed with T1DM<\/h3>\n<p><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>FRIDAY, April 6, 2018 (HealthDay News) &#8212; Type 1 diabetes is associated with cognitive dysfunction in children, according to a review published online March 23 in the <i>Journal of Diabetes Investigation<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Jing He, Ph.D., from Central South University in Changsha, China, and colleagues conducted a systematic literature review to identify studies on cognitive function in children with type 1 diabetes.<\/p>\n<p>Based on 19 included studies (1,355 patients with type 1 diabetes and 696 controls), the researchers found that children with type 1 diabetes showed a significantly poorer cognitive performance overall (g = \u22120.46), as well as specific deficits in full scale intelligence (g = \u22121.06), attention (g = \u22120.60), and psychomotor speed (g = \u22120.46). Furthermore, poorer overall cognition (g = \u22120.18), as well as slightly lower performance in memory (g = \u22120.27) were seen with glycemic extremes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Glycemic extremes, which [were] described as a period of high glucose levels and severe hypoglycemia, was related to cognitive dysfunction in children with type 1 diabetes,&#8221; the authors write.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/jdi.12840\" target=\"_new\">Abstract\/Full Text (subscription or payment may be required)<\/a><\/p>\n<p><i><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Copyright \u00a9 2018 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthday.com\/\" target=\"_new\">HealthDay<\/a>.
