{"id":3251,"date":"2018-04-04T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-04-04T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/medgoo.com\/index.php\/2018\/04\/04\/depressive-symptoms-tied-to-diabetes-self-management\/"},"modified":"2018-04-05T16:07:23","modified_gmt":"2018-04-05T16:07:23","slug":"depressive-symptoms-tied-to-diabetes-self-management","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medgoo.com\/index.php\/2018\/04\/04\/depressive-symptoms-tied-to-diabetes-self-management\/","title":{"rendered":"Depressive Symptoms Tied to Diabetes Self-Management"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Weaker effects of social, emotional support seen in self-efficacy of diabetes management<\/h3>\n<p><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>WEDNESDAY, April 4, 2018 (HealthDay News) &#8212; Changes in depressive symptoms can predict improvement in self-efficacy and adherence to diabetes management, according to a study published online March 27 in <i>Diabetes Care<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Hyunsung Oh, Ph.D., from Arizona State University in Phoenix, and Kathleen Ell, D.S.W., from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, assessed follow-up data from 251 patients participating in a randomized clinical trial evaluating the effectiveness of a promotora-assisted self-management intervention. The participants included Hispanic patients with probable depression in patient-centered medical homes at safety-net clinics.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers found that changes in depressive symptoms predicted self-efficacy and level of adherence at the six- and 12-month follow-ups. At six months, changes in total social support and emotional social support were correlated only with self-efficacy of diabetes management.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Decline in depressive symptoms is a reliable predictor of improvement in self-efficacy and adherence to diabetes management,&#8221; the authors write. &#8220;Further studies are recommended to study psychosocial mechanisms related to social relationships other than social support that affect diabetes management.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/care.diabetesjournals.org\/content\/early\/2018\/03\/26\/dc17-2000\" target=\"_new\">Abstract\/Full Text (subscription or payment may be required)<\/a><\/p>\n<p><i><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Copyright \u00a9 2018 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthday.com\/\" target=\"_new\">HealthDay<\/a>.
