{"id":29623,"date":"2020-01-03T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-01-03T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/medgoo.com\/index.php\/2020\/01\/03\/cardiorespiratory-fitness-linked-to-gray-matter-volume\/"},"modified":"2020-01-06T17:10:10","modified_gmt":"2020-01-06T17:10:10","slug":"cardiorespiratory-fitness-linked-to-gray-matter-volume","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medgoo.com\/index.php\/2020\/01\/03\/cardiorespiratory-fitness-linked-to-gray-matter-volume\/","title":{"rendered":"Cardiorespiratory Fitness Linked to Gray Matter Volume"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Strong association found for VO<sub>2<\/sub>peak with GM volume of left middle temporal gyrus, right hippocampal gyrus<\/h3>\n<p><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>FRIDAY, Jan. 3, 2020 (HealthDay News) &#8212; Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) is positively associated with gray matter (GM) volume and total brain volume and with GM volume in specific brain areas, according to a study published in the January issue of the <i>Mayo Clinic Proceedings<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Katharina Wittfeld, Ph.D., from the German Center for Neurodegenerative Disease in Greifswald, Germany, and colleagues studied 2,103 adults from two independent population-based cohorts to examine the association between CRF and global and local brain volumes. Peak oxygen uptake (VO<sub>2<\/sub>peak), oxygen uptake at the anaerobic threshold, and maximal power output from cardiopulmonary exercise testing on a bicycle ergometer were used to measure cardiorespiratory fitness. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) brain data were analyzed with adjustment for potentially confounding variables.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers found that CRF was associated with GM volume and total brain volume in volumetric analyses. A one-standard deviation increase in VO<sub>2<\/sub>peak was associated with a higher GM volume of 5.31 cm\u00b3 after multivariable adjustment. Significant positive relations were revealed between CRF and local GM volumes.
