The research was published to coincide with Kidney Week, the annual meeting of the American Society of Nephrology, held from Nov. 5 to 10 in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n<p>Ian H. de Boer, M.D., from the University of Washington in Seattle, and colleagues conducted a randomized trial among 1,312 adults with type 2 diabetes. Participants were randomly assigned to receive vitamin D<sub>3<\/sub> and omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D<sub>3<\/sub> and placebo, placebo and omega-3 fatty acids, or two placebos (370, 333, 289, and 320 participants, respectively) for five years; 71 percent completed the study.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers found that from baseline to year 5, the mean change in eGFR was \u221212.3 versus \u221213.1 mL\/min\/1.73 m\u00b2 with vitamin D<sub>3<\/sub> versus placebo (difference, 0.9; 95 percent confidence interval, \u22120.7 to 2.5). The mean change in eGFR was \u221212.2 versus \u221213.1 mL\/min\/1.73 m\u00b2 with omega-3 fatty acids versus placebo (difference, 0.9; 95 percent confidence interval, \u22120.7 to 2.6).
