{"id":27448,"date":"2019-11-08T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-11-08T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/medgoo.com\/index.php\/2019\/11\/08\/exercising-more-often-may-lower-cvd-risk-in-older-adults\/"},"modified":"2019-11-12T17:10:09","modified_gmt":"2019-11-12T17:10:09","slug":"exercising-more-often-may-lower-cvd-risk-in-older-adults","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medgoo.com\/index.php\/2019\/11\/08\/exercising-more-often-may-lower-cvd-risk-in-older-adults\/","title":{"rendered":"Exercising More Often May Lower CVD Risk in Older Adults"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Maintaining, increasing frequency of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity level may reduce CVD risk<\/h3>\n<p><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>FRIDAY, Nov. 8, 2019 (HealthDay News) &#8212; Older adults who increase their frequency of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) have a significantly lower risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) compared with those who are continuously physically inactive, according to a study published online Nov. 7 in the <i>European Heart Journal<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Kyuwoong Kim, from the Seoul National University Graduate School in South Korea, and colleagues examined the correlation between changes in MVPA and CVD in a nationwide cohort study of older adults aged 60 years and older. The risk for CVD was assessed prospectively between 2013 and 2016 according to changes in frequency of MVPA.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers found that those who increased their frequency of MVPA from physically inactive to active had a significant reduced risk for total CVD compared with those who were continuously physically inactive (engaging in physical activity one to two times per week: 0.7\/1,000 person-years [PY] decrease in incidence rate [IR; adjusted hazard ratio, 0.95]; three to four times per week: 1.5\/1,000 PY decrease in IR [adjusted hazard ratio, 0.89]; and at least five times per week: 0.4\/1,000 PY decrease in IR [adjusted hazard ratio, 0.91]). Compared with those who maintained their frequency of MVPA, older adults who became physically inactive after engaging in MVPA more than one to two times per week had a higher CVD risk.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We believe that community-based programs to encourage physical activity among older adults should be promoted by governments,&#8221; Kim said in a statement. &#8220;Also, from a clinical perspective, physicians should &#8216;prescribe&#8217; physical activity along with other recommended medical treatments for people with a high risk of cardiovascular disease.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/eurheartj\/advance-article-abstract\/doi\/10.1093\/eurheartj\/ehz768\/5613737\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Abstract\/Full Text (subscription or payment may be required)<\/a><\/p>\n<p><i><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Copyright \u00a9 2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthday.com\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HealthDay<\/a>.
