{"id":25168,"date":"2019-09-13T14:30:59","date_gmt":"2019-09-13T14:30:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/medgoo.com\/?p=25168"},"modified":"2019-09-26T14:58:31","modified_gmt":"2019-09-26T14:58:31","slug":"the-gender-pay-gap-among-physicians","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medgoo.com\/index.php\/2019\/09\/13\/the-gender-pay-gap-among-physicians\/","title":{"rendered":"The Gender Pay Gap Among Physicians"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em><strong>You Must Be Kidding<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After checking equal pay\u2019s vital\nsigns among early and mid-career pediatricians, a new study reports continued\nsymptoms of gender discrimination.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the study\u2019s baseline, mean annual earnings came in at about $213,392 for men and $162,073 for women \u2013 which means female pediatricians earn 76 percent of what their male counterparts earn \u2013 or $51,000 less.<sup>1<\/sup> The gap closes a bit after adjusting for factors that can influence income, such as demographics, work hours, and specialty, with women making 87 percent of what men earn, or \u201conly\u201d $26,000 less. Upping adjustment factors to 18, including physician-specific job and work-family characteristics (e.g. Mom missing work to care for her own children), the gap shrank a little more, with women pediatricians earning 94 percent of what men earn, or $8,000 less. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>QUESTION<\/strong>: Why is Mom missing work to care for her children a factor that influences income? Should it not be Mom <em>AND<\/em> Dad caring for their children? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pediatrician Life and Career Experience Study, a program of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), led the study, which included nearly 1,000 peds five to 14 years past residency when surveyed in 2016. The study, titled Gender Differences in Earnings of Early- and Midcareer Pediatricians, was published in AAP\u2019s official journal, Pediatrics, September 2019.<sup>2<\/sup> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>What\u2019s up Doc?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So why make such a fuss specific to equal pay among pediatricians? Regardless of profession, it\u2019s old news. Well look out world, because there\u2019s some new news, straight from the Association of American Medical Colleges. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>For the first time in history, women outnumbered men in U.S. medical schools.
