{"id":24093,"date":"2019-08-16T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-08-16T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/medgoo.com\/index.php\/2019\/08\/16\/air-pollutants-tied-to-significant-worsening-of-emphysema\/"},"modified":"2019-08-19T16:06:42","modified_gmt":"2019-08-19T16:06:42","slug":"air-pollutants-tied-to-significant-worsening-of-emphysema","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medgoo.com\/index.php\/2019\/08\/16\/air-pollutants-tied-to-significant-worsening-of-emphysema\/","title":{"rendered":"Air Pollutants Tied to Significant Worsening of Emphysema"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Emphysema assessed quantitatively using CT imaging and lung function for patients in multiple U.S. cities<\/h3>\n<p><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>FRIDAY, Aug. 16, 2019 (HealthDay News) &#8212; Long-term exposure to ambient air pollutants, especially ozone (O<sub>3<\/sub>), is significantly associated with worsening emphysema, according to a study published in the Aug. 13 issue of the <i>Journal of the American Medical Association<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Meng Wang, Ph.D., from the University of Washington in Seattle, and colleagues assessed the longitudinal association of ambient O<sub>3<\/sub>, fine particulate matter (PM<sub>2.5<\/sub>), oxides of nitrogen (NO<sub>x<\/sub>), and black carbon exposure with progression of emphysema. Data for 7,071 study participants in the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis Air and Lung Studies (July 2000 through November 2018) were included.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers found a median percent emphysema of 3 percent at baseline that increased a mean of 0.58 percentage points per 10 years. During follow-up, mean ambient concentrations of PM<sub>2.5<\/sub> and NO<sub>x<\/sub>, but not O<sub>3<\/sub>, decreased substantially. There was a significant association between ambient concentrations of PM<sub>2.5<\/sub>, NO<sub>x<\/sub>, O<sub>3<\/sub>, and black carbon at study baseline and greater increases in percent emphysema per 10 years. There was also a significant association between ambient O<sub>3<\/sub> and NO<sub>x<\/sub> concentrations, but not PM<sub>2.5<\/sub> concentrations, with greater increases in percent emphysema.
