{"id":2155,"date":"2018-03-15T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-03-15T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/medgoo.com\/index.php\/2018\/03\/15\/higher-exposure-to-air-pollution-adds-to-cvd-risk-for-blacks\/"},"modified":"2018-03-16T16:08:30","modified_gmt":"2018-03-16T16:08:30","slug":"higher-exposure-to-air-pollution-adds-to-cvd-risk-for-blacks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medgoo.com\/index.php\/2018\/03\/15\/higher-exposure-to-air-pollution-adds-to-cvd-risk-for-blacks\/","title":{"rendered":"Higher Exposure to Air Pollution Adds to CVD Risk for Blacks"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Higher rate of incident CVD events, all-cause mortality in blacks partly due to PM<sub>2.5<\/sub> exposure<\/h3>\n<p><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>THURSDAY, March 15, 2018 (HealthDay News) &#8212; Blacks have significantly higher exposure to ambient fine particulate matter (particles with median aerodynamic diameter <2.5 \u00b5m [PM<sub>2.5<\/sub>]), with exposure associated with elevated blood glucose, worse endothelial function, and incident cardiovascular disease (CVD), according to a study published online March 15 in <i>Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Sebhat Erqou, M.D., Ph.D., from the University of Pittsburgh, and colleagues used data from the Heart Strategies Concentrating on Risk Evaluation study to estimate the one-year average air pollution exposure to PM<sub>2.5<\/sub> and black carbon (BC). Associations with clinical outcomes were assessed after adjustment for traditional CVD risk factors. Data were included for 1,717 participants (45 percent blacks).<\/p>\n<p>The researchers found that compared with whites, blacks had significantly higher exposure to PM<sub>2.5<\/sub>. There was an independent association for exposure to PM<sub>2.5<\/sub>, but not BC, with higher blood glucose and worse arterial endothelial function. For a median follow-up of 8.3 years, PM<sub>2.5<\/sub> correlated with an increased risk of incident CVD events and all-cause mortality combined. In models adjusted for relevant covariates, blacks had 1.45 higher risk (95 percent confidence interval, 1.00 to 2.09) of combined CVD events and all-cause mortality than whites; the correlation was modestly attenuated after adjustment for PM<sub>2.5<\/sub>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Blacks had a higher rate of incident CVD events and all-cause mortality than whites that was only partly explained by higher exposure to PM<sub>2.5<\/sub>,&#8221; the authors write.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/atvb.ahajournals.org\/content\/early\/2018\/03\/14\/ATVBAHA.117.310305\" target=\"_new\">Abstract\/Full Text (subscription or payment may be required)<\/a><\/p>\n<p><i><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Copyright \u00a9 2018 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthday.com\/\" target=\"_new\">HealthDay<\/a>.
