States in the Northeast and Pacific Northwest generally scored well, while several states in the South and Southwest ranked among the worst.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Top 10 States<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Vermont<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>New York<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Washington<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>New Jersey<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Maine<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Idaho<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Maryland<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Massachusetts<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Pennsylvania<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Oregon<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Bottom 10 States<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>West Virginia<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Kentucky<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Louisiana<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Florida<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Mississippi<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Missouri<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Arizona<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Arkansas<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Hawaii<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>New Mexico<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The report found a clear correlation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur scorecard shows that states with strong clean energy and resilience policies are doing a better job protecting health and health care infrastructure, while other states leave patients exposed during potential crises,\u201d said study author <a href=\"https:\/\/coe.northeastern.edu\/people\/eckelman-matthew\/\">Matthew Eckelman<\/a>, an associate professor at Northeastern University in Boston.<\/p>\n<p>Some areas face unique dangers.<\/p>\n<p>Southwestern states like Arizona and New Mexico have the greatest risk from extreme heat, while health infrastructure in low-lying coastal states like Florida and Louisiana has a high flood risk.<\/p>\n<p>Florida has the nation\u2019s highest percentage of hospital beds \u2014 nearly 15% \u2014 located in high-hazard flood zones, the study showed.<\/p>\n<p>Extreme weather events are devastating and costly.<\/p>\n<p>Last year alone, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncei.noaa.gov\/access\/billions\/\">National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration <\/a>(NOAA) reported 27 weather and climate disasters with damage topping $1 billion in each. These disasters resulted in 568 direct or indirect deaths, making 2024 the eighth-highest fatality year in the last 45 years.<\/p>\n<p>Commonwealth Fund President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonwealthfund.org\/person\/joseph-r-betancourt\">Joseph Betancourt<\/a> stressed the basic necessity of climate readiness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are better off when they can breathe clean air and when the hospitals they depend on are prepared for extreme weather,\u201d he said in a news release.<\/p>\n<p>The study authors urged states to take four key steps to reduce harmful health impacts and improve resilience:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Strengthen clean energy and energy efficiency policies.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Support health care facilities in preparing for extreme weather and assessing climate risks.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Require standardized reporting of health care sector emissions to guide improvements.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Help hospitals and clinics invest in resilient infrastructure, clean power and low-emission transportation for staff and patients.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>More Information<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences offers resources on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niehs.nih.gov\/news\/factor\/2024\/9\/feature\/2-feature-climate-and-health\">climate change and human health<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>SOURCES: <em>U.S. News &amp; World Report<\/em>, Sept. 25, 2025; Commonwealth Fund State Scorecard on Climate, Health, and Health Care, Sept. 25, 2025<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What This Means For You<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The health and safety of the population during a climate-related emergency hinge on the state\u2019s policies and hospital readiness.
