Edwards HealthDay Reporter<\/b><br \/>\n<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>THURSDAY, Sept. 11, 2025 (HealthDay News) \u2014 Shark meat sold in the U.S. may come from endangered species without consumers realizing it, a new study warns.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers tested 29 shark products, including 19 fillets bought in grocery stores and seafood markets across North Carolina, Florida, Georgia and Washington, D.C., plus 10 jerky products purchased online.<\/p>\n<p>Using DNA barcoding, they identified the species and compared them with the product labels.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We found critically endangered sharks, including great hammerhead and scalloped hammerhead, being sold in grocery stores, seafood markets and online,&#8221; lead researcher <a href=\"https:\/\/galapagos.unc.edu\/cgs-people\/savannah-ryburn\/\">Savannah Ryburn<\/a> of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill told <em>CBS News.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Of the 29 samples, 93% were ambiguously labeled as &#8216;shark,&#8217; and one of the two products labeled at the species level was mislabeled,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<p>The study \u2014 published Sept. 10 in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/marine-science\/articles\/10.3389\/fmars.2025.1604454\/full\">Frontiers<\/a><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/marine-science\/articles\/10.3389\/fmars.2025.1604454\/full\"> <\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/marine-science\/articles\/10.3389\/fmars.2025.1604454\/full\">in Marine Science<\/a><\/em> \u2014 found that 31% of products came from endangered or critically endangered species, including great hammerhead, scalloped hammerhead, tope and shortfin mako sharks.<\/p>\n<p>Other samples came from species considered vulnerable or near-threatened, such as spinner, lemon, thresher, blacktip, smooth-hound and Pacific angelsharks.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond conservation issues, mislabeled shark meat could also pose health risks.<\/p>\n<p>Species like the scalloped hammerhead, great hammerhead and dusky smooth-hound are known to carry high levels of mercury, methylmercury and arsenic, substances linked to <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/24727-arsenic-poisoning\">neurological and developmental problems<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When consumers are purchasing ambiguously labeled or mislabeled shark meat, they have no way to know what species they are consuming and what the associated health risks might be,&#8221; the study authors wrote.<\/p>\n<p>They recommend requiring species-specific labeling to help consumers make informed choices.<\/p>\n<p>Ryburn advised avoiding products that don&#8217;t have traceable sourcing: \u201cWhen shark meat is not a food security necessity, consumers should avoid purchasing products that lack species-level labeling or traceable sourcing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>More information<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Oceanic Preservation Society has more on <a href=\"https:\/\/opsociety.org\/shark-meat\">consuming shark meat<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>SOURCES: <em>Frontiers<\/em>, Sept. 9, 2025; <em>CBS News<\/em>, Sept. 10, 2025<\/p>\n<p><i><\/i><br \/>\n<i>Copyright &#169; 2025 <a href=\"https:\/\/consumer.healthday.com\/\" target=\"_new\">HealthDay<\/a>.
