Edwards HealthDay Reporter<\/b><br \/>\n<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>THURSDAY, Sept. 4, 2025 (HealthDay News) \u2014 Florida may soon become the first state in the U.S. to eliminate all vaccine mandates, a major shift in health policy that may increase risk of disease outbreaks.<\/p>\n<p>The plan was announced this week by State Surgeon General <a href=\"https:\/\/www.floridahealth.gov\/about\/ssg\/index.html\">Dr. Joseph Ladapo<\/a>, who described current vaccine rules as &#8220;immoral.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople have a right to make their own informed decisions,\u201d Ladapo said at a news conference. \u201cThey don\u2019t have the right to tell you what to put in your body.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If approved, the policy would represent a big shift from decades of public health guidance. For years, vaccines have been considered the safest and most effective way to stop the spread of contagious diseases, especially in schools, <em>The Associated Press<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n<p>Many health officials say the move is extremely risky.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen everyone in a school is vaccinated, it is harder for diseases to spread and easier for everyone to continue learning and having fun,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/med.jax.ufl.edu\/directory\/bio\/2469\/rana-alissa\/\">Dr. Rana Alissa<\/a>, chair of the Florida Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, told <em>The AP.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen children are sick and miss school, caregivers also miss work, which not only impacts those families but also the local economy,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>The American Medical Association (AMA) also urged Florida to reconsider, warning the plan \u201cwould undermine decades of public health progress,&#8221; <em>The AP <\/em>reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile there is still time, we urge Florida to reconsider this change to help prevent a rise of infectious disease outbreaks that put health and lives at risk,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ama-assn.org\/about\/board-trustees\/sandra-adamson-fryhofer-md\">Dr. Sandra Adamson Fryhofer<\/a>, an AMA trustee, said.<\/p>\n<p>The proposal dovetails with more controversy over vaccine policy at the state level.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, the governors of Washington, Oregon and California announced a new alliance to protect vaccine access and maintain health guidelines based on recommendations from national medical organizations, <em>The AP <\/em>reported.<\/p>\n<p>Globally, vaccines have saved an estimated 154 million lives over the last 50 years, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVaccines are among the most powerful inventions in history, making once-feared diseases preventable,\u201d WHO Director-General <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/director-general\/tedros-adhanom-ghebreyesus\">Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus<\/a> told <em>The AP.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ladapo did not provide a timeline for removing Florida\u2019s vaccine mandates.
