THURSDAY, March 28, 2019 (HealthDay News) — Lifetime risks of hypertension under the American Heart Association (AHA) and American College of Cardiology (ACC) 2017 threshold exceed 75 percent for white men and African-American men and women, according to a study published online March 27 in JAMA Cardiology<\/i>.<\/p>\n
Vincent Chen, from the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, and colleagues quantified and compared lifetime risks for hypertension in white and African-American men and women under the hypertension thresholds of the AHA\/ACC 2017 (single blood pressure measurement of \u2265130\/80 mm Hg or self-reported antihypertensive medication use) and the Seventh Joint National Commission (JNC7; \u2265140\/90 mm Hg or use of antihypertensive medications). Data were included for 13,160 participants who contributed 227,600 person-years of follow-up.<\/p>\n
The researchers found that for participants entering the data set between age 20 and 30 years, the baseline prevalence of hypertension under the AHA\/ACC 2017 threshold was 30.7 percent in white men, 23.1 percent in African-American men, 10.2 percent in white women, and 12.3 percent in African-American women. The lifetime risks for hypertension were 83.8, 86.1, 69.3, and 85.7 percent for white men, African-American men, white women, and African-American women, respectively. These risks were greater than the corresponding lifetime risks with the JNC7 thresholds (60.5, 74.7, 53.9, and 77.3 percent, respectively).<\/p>\n
“Blood pressure awareness and primordial prevention early in the life course is needed to curb the epidemic of hypertension-associated diseases,” the authors write.<\/p>\n
