MONDAY, Aug. 4, 2025 (HealthDay News) \u2014 The Presidential Fitness Test is returning to U.S. schools after more than a decade.<\/p>\n
President Donald Trump<\/a> signed an executive order Thursday to bring back the program, which aims to improve physical fitness among students. The test was launched in 1956 and ended in 2013.<\/p>\n U.S. Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr<\/a>. will lead the venture. He has spoken out about rising childhood obesity and the need for healthier habits among young people.<\/p>\n \u201cPresident Trump wants every young American to have the opportunity to emphasize healthy, active lifestyles \u2014 creating a culture of strength and excellence for years to come,\u201d White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt<\/a> told NBC News<\/em>.<\/p>\n The original test asked kids to do exercises such as push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups, running and toe-touches. High-performing students could earn the Presidential Physical Fitness Award.<\/p>\n In 2013, the Obama administration replaced the test with the Presidential Youth Fitness Program, which focused less on athletic skill and more on individual health.<\/p>\n The new version will again reward students who excel in physical fitness. It will be led by the President\u2019s Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition, which will create updated fitness standards and school programs.<\/p>\n Kennedy said the award \u201cwas a huge item of pride when I was growing up,\u201d and that the country needs to bring back \u201cthat spirit of competition and that commitment to nutrition and physical fitness.\u201d<\/p>\n Professional athletes will help support the program.
