And let\u2019s not\nforget politics. No matter which side of the aisle you\u2019re on, this topic stresses\nso many Americans. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a national poll,\nconducted by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) <sup>(1)<\/sup>, Americans\u2019\nanxiety levels experienced sharp increases in 2018. FYI: APA\u2019s 2018 U.S. anxiety score \u2013 derived by mean scores\non a 0 to 100 scale \u2013 is 51. That\u2019s a five-point jump since 2017. And no\ndemographic is exempt, with millennials continuing to be more anxious than Gen\nXers or baby boomers, although baby boomers\u2019 anxiety level increased the most,\nwith a seven-point jump between 2017 and 2018.<sup>(1)<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to mental health professionals, it\u2019s likely that healthcare providers (HCP) are also affected by this influx in anxiety \u2013 since this \u201cfeeling\u201d often goes hand in hand with physical symptoms that steer patients to their HCP. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s look at January 2019 for\ninstance. Seventy-four percent of U.S. primary care physicians (PCPs) report that their patient population was\nphysically affected by the infamous government shutdown.<sup>(2)<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So before reaching for the prescription pad, let\u2019s review a few of those stress-induced physical symptoms that mimic symptoms associated with other health problems. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Insomnia <\/li><li>Headaches<\/li><li>Digestive Issues, including nausea, diarrhea, and\/or constipation<\/li><li>Chest pain, sometimes accompanied by shortness of breath<\/li><li>Jaw issues, such as clenched jaw, pain, and\/or teeth grinding<\/li><li>Fatigue and\/or low energy<\/li><li>Frequent sickness<sup> <\/sup>and colds<\/li><li>High blood pressure<\/li><li>Acne<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The American Institute of Stress<sup>(3)<\/sup> (AIS) offers\na lengthy explanation of why and how stress induces physical symptoms and\nreprocutions, but here\u2019s just one that might steer a patient to their PCP. As\nAIS explains on its website, frequent or chronic stress forces the heart to work too hard for too long\nand also raises the patient\u2019s blood pressure. As this happens, AIS adds, \u201cso do\nyour risks for having a stroke or heart attack.\u201d<sup>(3)<\/sup> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, there\u2019s a stat released as part of a 2013 study that remains relevant and widely quoted today: 60 to 80 percent of primary care visits involve a stress component. <sup>(4)<\/sup> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So what do <strong><em>you<\/em><\/strong> think about stress in America?
