Edwards HealthDay Reporter<\/b><br \/>\n<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>WEDNESDAY, May 28, 2025 (HealthDay News) \u2014 The top U.S. health agency will no longer recommend the COVID-19 vaccine for healthy children and pregnant women.<\/p>\n<p>Tuesday&#8217;s announcement by U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/about\/leadership\/robert-kennedy.html\">Robert F. Kennedy Jr<\/a>. bypasses the typical vaccine recommendation process, which includes review by experts at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), <em>The Washington Post<\/em> said.<\/p>\n<p>Kennedy, who has long questioned vaccine safety, shared the news in a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SecKennedy\/status\/1927368440811008138\">58-second video<\/a> posted on X.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I couldn\u2019t be more pleased to announce that as of today the COVID vaccine for healthy children and healthy pregnant women has been removed from the CDC recommended immunization schedule,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast year the Biden administration urged healthy children to get yet another COVID shot despite the lack of any clinical data to support the repeat booster strategy in children,\u201d Kennedy added.<\/p>\n<p>He appeared in the video with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/about-fda\/fda-organization\/martin-makary\">Dr. Marty Makary<\/a>, commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/about-nih\/who-we-are\/nih-director\">Dr. Jay Bhattacharya<\/a>, director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).<\/p>\n<p>They did not provide data or further explanation for the decision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no evidence healthy kids need it today, and most countries have stopped recommending it for children,\u201d Makary said.<\/p>\n<p>Public health experts were quick to respond.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/georges-benjamin-76a3a87\">Georges Benjamin<\/a>, executive director of the American Public Health Association, said the administration had hinted this change was coming. But he wants to see the science behind it, <em>The Post <\/em>reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre they making this decision without going to any of their advisory committees?\u201d Benjamin said. \u201cShow us the evidence, the studies that have been done. \u2026 I don\u2019t know of any.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The CDC has said that pregnant women are at higher risk for severe illness from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthday.com\/a-to-z-health\/public-health\/covid-2665435130.html\">COVID-19<\/a> and may face complications such as preterm birth or stillbirth.<\/p>\n<p>Just 14.4% of eligible pregnant women and 13% of eligible children have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/respiratory-viruses\/data\/vaccination-trends.html\">received the latest version<\/a> of the COVID shot.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement also bypassed the usual review by the CDC\u2019s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices.
