{"id":120607,"date":"2025-02-24T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-02-24T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/medgoo.com\/index.php\/2025\/02\/24\/bird-flu-found-in-rats-for-first-time-usda-confirms\/"},"modified":"2025-02-25T18:10:33","modified_gmt":"2025-02-25T18:10:33","slug":"bird-flu-found-in-rats-for-first-time-usda-confirms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medgoo.com\/index.php\/2025\/02\/24\/bird-flu-found-in-rats-for-first-time-usda-confirms\/","title":{"rendered":"Bird Flu Found in Rats for First Time, USDA Confirms"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><\/h3>\n<p><b>By India Edwards HealthDay Reporter<\/b><br \/>\n<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>MONDAY, Feb. 24, 2025 (HealthDay News) &#8212; For the first time, bird flu has been detected in rats, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) confirmed, according to a recent report.<\/p>\n<p>Bird flu, otherwise known as H5N1 avian influenza, was found in four black rats in Riverside County, California, where two recent poultry outbreaks were reported.<\/p>\n<p>Officials said the rats were likely infected after exposure to sick birds on nearby farms.<\/p>\n<p>The USDA&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aphis.usda.gov\/livestock-poultry-disease\/avian\/avian-influenza\/hpai-detections\/mammals\">update<\/a>, published Feb. 19, also included previous detections in mice and other mammals, like a fox in North Dakota, a bobcat in Washington state, a mountain lion in Wisconsin, a harbor seal in Massachusetts and two domestic cats in Oregon.<\/p>\n<p>The agency noted the Oregon cat infection was likely tied to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthday.com\/health-news\/infectious-disease\/raw-pet-food-recalled-after-bird-flu-sickens-then-kills-two-cats\">raw pet food<\/a> contaminated with the virus.<\/p>\n<p>The discovery comes as the USDA scrambles to rehire bird flu experts it had recently laid off due to budget cuts. The cuts were recommended by billionaire Elon Musk&#8217;s Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Although several positions supporting [bird flu] were notified of their terminations over the weekend, we are working to swiftly rectify the situation and rescind those letters,&#8221; the USDA said in a statement to <em>CBS News<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Officials confirmed that veterinarians and emergency response personnel were exempted from layoffs to ensure ongoing efforts to deal with the virus.<\/p>\n<p>Since bird flu began spreading in the U.S. in 2022, more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/bird-flu\/situation-summary\/data-map-commercial.html\">162 million<\/a> birds have been affected, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).<\/p>\n<p>The virus was also detected in dairy cows for the first time in March 2024, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/bird-flu\/situation-summary\/index.html\">70 human cases<\/a> have been reported, mostly among dairy and poultry workers.<\/p>\n<p>One person, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthday.com\/health-news\/infectious-disease\/first-us-death-from-bird-flu-reported-in-louisiana\">Louisiana resident<\/a>, has died from the virus, according to the CDC.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More information<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has more on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/bird-flu\/situation-summary\/index.html\">current bird flu situation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>SOURCE: U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; <em>CBS News, <\/em>media report, Feb. 20, 2025<\/p>\n<p><i><\/i><br \/>\n<i>Copyright &#169; 2025 <a href=\"https:\/\/consumer.healthday.com\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">HealthDay<\/a>.
