{"id":11658,"date":"2018-10-15T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-10-15T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/medgoo.com\/index.php\/2018\/10\/15\/cataract-surgery-tied-to-drop-in-cognitive-decline-in-seniors\/"},"modified":"2018-10-16T16:02:12","modified_gmt":"2018-10-16T16:02:12","slug":"cataract-surgery-tied-to-drop-in-cognitive-decline-in-seniors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medgoo.com\/index.php\/2018\/10\/15\/cataract-surgery-tied-to-drop-in-cognitive-decline-in-seniors\/","title":{"rendered":"Cataract Surgery Tied to Drop in Cognitive Decline in Seniors"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Decline in episodic memory scores seen with older age slower after versus before cataract surgery<\/h3>\n<p><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>MONDAY, Oct. 15, 2018 (HealthDay News) &#8212; Cataract surgery is associated with a reduction in the rate of cognitive decline among older adults, according to a study published online Oct. 11 in <i>PLOS ONE<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Asri Maharani, M.D., Ph.D., from the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom, and colleagues used data from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing Wave 1 (2002\/2003) through Wave 7 (2014\/2015) to examine trajectories of cognitive decline before and after cataract surgery. The treatment group was composed of 2,068 individuals who underwent cataract surgery between Wave 2 and Wave 6 and 3,636 propensity score-matched individuals with no cataract disease who were included as the control group.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers found that after controlling for potential covariates, cataract surgery correlated positively with episodic memory scores (\u03b2 = 4.23). With older age, there was a decline in episodic memory scores; the decline was slower after cataract surgery (\u03b2 = \u22120.05) versus before cataract surgery (\u03b2 = \u22120.1). Before the intervention, episodic memory declined more slowly among those in the control group (\u03b2 = \u22120.08) versus those in the intervention group (\u03b2 = \u22120. 1), while after the intervention, the declines in episodic memory scores were similar (both groups \u03b2 = \u22120.05).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our finding supports the cascade hypothesis, according to which cataract surgery may allow better visual input and thus result in a slower rate of cognitive decline by means of several potential mechanisms,&#8221; the authors write.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0204833\" target=\"_new\">Abstract\/Full Text<\/a><\/p>\n<p><i><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Copyright \u00a9 2018 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthday.com\/\" target=\"_new\">HealthDay<\/a>.
