Right now, the FDA only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/media\/146214\/download\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">discourages<\/a> using such hair-straightening products, which are typically used by Black women.<\/p>\n<p style=\"\">&#8220;We know that these products are very poorly regulated by the federal government in terms of what goes in there,&#8221; said Kimberly Bertrand, an associate professor of medicine at Boston University School of Medicine and the lead author of a recently published study on the dangers of relaxers. &#8220;You can&#8217;t look at an ingredient label and know that it contains these endocrine disruptors. They don&#8217;t list phthalates and parabens on the box &#8212; they say fragrance and preservative. So, women don&#8217;t really know what they&#8217;re being exposed to.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0013935123020327\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">that study<\/a>, data from Boston University&#8217;s Black Women&#8217;s Health Study, which began in 1995 and tracks the health of 59,000 Black women, showed that postmenopausal Black women who used chemical hair straighteners had a higher risk of developing uterine cancer, <em>NBC News<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n<p style=\"\">Another study published recently by the <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/aje\/article-abstract\/192\/7\/1066\/7098283\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>American Journal of Epidemiology<\/em><\/a> found lower fertility in current and former users of hair straighteners.<\/p>\n<p style=\"\">Women who used hair-straightening chemicals more than four times in the previous year were more than twice as likely to develop uterine cancer, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/tools.niehs.nih.gov\/newsreleases\/index.cfm\/detail\/946451\/hair-straightening-chemicals-associated-with-higher-uterine-cancer-risk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> published last year by the U.S. National Institutes of Health.<\/p>\n<p style=\"\">A number of cosmetics companies, including Revlon and L&#8217;Or \u00a9al, have also faced lawsuits over claims that their straightening products have led Black women to develop uterine and breast cancer, infertility, and other health issues, <em>NBC News<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n<p style=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/fda-proposes-ban-hair-relaxers-formaldehyde-rcna120866\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>NBC News<\/em> Article<\/a><\/p>\n<p><i><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Copyright \u00a9 2023 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.healthday.com\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">HealthDay<\/a>.
