{"id":1041,"date":"2018-02-22T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-02-22T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/medgoo.com\/index.php\/2018\/02\/22\/cardiorespiratory-fitness-white-matter-integrity-tied-to-cognition\/"},"modified":"2018-02-23T17:09:34","modified_gmt":"2018-02-23T17:09:34","slug":"cardiorespiratory-fitness-white-matter-integrity-tied-to-cognition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medgoo.com\/index.php\/2018\/02\/22\/cardiorespiratory-fitness-white-matter-integrity-tied-to-cognition\/","title":{"rendered":"Cardiorespiratory Fitness, White Matter Integrity Tied to Cognition"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>VO<sub>2<\/sub>max positively linked to DTI metrics of fractional anisotropy in about half MW fiber tracts<\/h3>\n<p><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>THURSDAY, Feb. 22, 2018 (HealthDay News) &#8212; Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) is associated with better white matter (WM) fiber integrity in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), according to a study published recently in the <i>Journal of Alzheimer&#8217;s Disease<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Kan Ding, M.D., from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, and colleagues examined the correlations of CRF measured by maximal oxygen uptake (VO<sub>2<\/sub>max) with WM fiber integrity and neurocognitive performance. The correlation was assessed in 81 participants (aged 65 \u00b1 7 years), including 26 cognitively normal adults and 55 amnestic MCI patients.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers observed no difference in global WM fiber integrity and VO<sub>2<\/sub>max for cognitively normal older adults and MCI patients. There was a positive correlation for VO<sub>2<\/sub>max with diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) metrics of fractional anisotropy in about 54 percent of WM fiber tracts, and a negative correlation with mean and radial diffusivities in about 46 and about 56 percent, respectively, of the WM fiber tracts. After adjustment for age, sex, body mass index, WM lesion burden, and MCI status, the correlations of VO<sub>2<\/sub>max with DTI metrics remained significant.
