Endometriosis Tied to Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes

Association seen between endometriosis and pregnancy loss, hypertensive disorders, gestational diabetes

FRIDAY, Aug. 9, 2019 (HealthDay News) — Laparoscopically confirmed endometriosis is associated with several adverse pregnancy outcomes, according to a study published online Aug. 7 in Obstetrics & Gynecology.

Leslie V. Farland, Sc.D., from University of Arizona in Tucson, and colleagues evaluated the relationship between endometriosis and adverse pregnancy outcomes (miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, stillbirth, gestational diabetes mellitus [GDM], hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, preterm birth, and low birth weight) among 116,429 women participating in the Nurses’ Health Study II.

The researchers identified a total of 196,722 reported pregnancies. There was an association noted between endometriosis and a greater risk of pregnancy loss (miscarriage: relative risk, 1.40; ectopic pregnancy: relative risk, 1.46). There was also a greater risk of GDM (relative risk, 1.35) and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (relative risk, 1.30) associated with endometriosis.

“Future research should focus on the potential biological pathways underlying these relationships to inform screening or preventive interventions,” the authors write.
