Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that causes people to stop breathing repeatedly during sleep. This can lead to a number of health problems, including daytime sleepiness, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating.

There are two main types of sleep apnea: obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and central sleep apnea (CSA). OSA occurs when the muscles in the throat relax and block the airway during sleep. CSA occurs when the brain does not send signals to the muscles that control breathing during sleep.

Sleep apnea can be diagnosed and treated by a sleep specialist. Sleep specialists are doctors who have specialized training in sleep disorders. They can perform a number of tests to diagnose sleep apnea, including a sleep study.

In some cases, people with sleep apnea may be able to receive treatment from a non-sleep specialist. Non-sleep specialists are doctors who do not have specialized training in sleep disorders. However, they may be able to diagnose and treat sleep apnea in some cases.

A study published in the journal Sleep found that non-sleep specialists may offer similar quality sleep apnea care as sleep specialists. The study looked at the outcomes of people with sleep apnea who were treated by non-sleep specialists and sleep specialists. The study found that there was no significant difference in the outcomes of the two groups.

The study also found that non-sleep specialists were more likely to refer patients to sleep specialists for additional care if needed. This suggests that non-sleep specialists may be aware of their limitations in treating sleep apnea and may be willing to refer patients to sleep specialists when necessary.

If you are considering treatment for sleep apnea, you may want to talk to your doctor about whether you can see a non-sleep specialist. Non-sleep specialists may be able to offer you similar quality care as sleep specialists, and they may be more affordable.

Here are some additional things to consider when choosing a doctor to treat your sleep apnea:

  • The doctor’s experience: Make sure the doctor you choose has experience treating sleep apnea. You can ask the doctor about their experience level and the number of patients they have treated with sleep apnea.
  • The doctor’s location: If you need to see the doctor for follow-up appointments, make sure they are located in a convenient location for you.
  • The doctor’s cost: Ask the doctor about their fees and whether they accept your insurance.
  • The doctor’s communication style: Make sure you feel comfortable communicating with the doctor and that they are willing to answer your questions.

It is important to find a doctor that you feel comfortable with and that you can trust to provide you with quality care.
